Students from Davao dominate SWEEP Open Competition

[17 March 2015] A mobile application that automatically sends an SOS text to emergency hotlines when you call out for help; another one that facilitates quick response from auto repair shops during road mishaps or when your vehicle bogs down; an interactive gaming app that sharpens your knowledge on local heritage and tourism spots, as well as Philippine history; an app that lets you stay in touch with friends without the need for Internet connection; and one that allows foodies not only to check the nearest restaurant or food joint but the actual feel and look of the place and the food.
A mobile application that automatically sends an SOS text to emergency hotlines when you call out for help; another one that facilitates quick response from auto repair shops during road mishaps or when your vehicle bogs down; an interactive gaming app that sharpens your knowledge on local heritage and tourism spots, as well as Philippine history; an app that lets you stay in touch with friends without the need for Internet connection; and one that allows foodies not only to check the nearest restaurant or food joint but the actual feel and look of the place and the food.
These are mobile apps designed by students from the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) that emerged winners of the first-ever Open Competition at the recent 11th SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards organized by wireless leader Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).
The new category was introduced to students from both partner-schools under the Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), and non-SWEEP schools. Entries were accepted based on criteria set by the Smart Developer Network (SmartDevNet), the telco’s developer community program.
“We have expanded the SWEEP Awards to encourage students from schools all over the country to design mobile apps that address common problems. If these apps can be commercialized, they will add to the suite of services that Smart can offer to its subscribers,” said Ramon R. Isberto, head of Public Affairs at Smart.
Jason Dy’s TextPlus, Zaneth’s The Adventure of Juan, Janda Magno’s Autofix, Louella Jane Catilosa’s SOS App, and Quincy Sacdalan’s Food Travel have bested other entries that competed for the SmartDevNet Award for the top five mobile and web applications utilizing location-based services and SMS technology.
“For the first salvo of the SWEEP Open Competition, we chose mobile apps that utilize SMS and location-based services because these are apps that have the most potential to be commercialized. We will assist these students in transforming their ideas into viable services that we can offer to our subscribers,” said Mellissa Limcaoco, head of Digital Innovations and Value Added Services.
Apart from cash prizes, the five winners will get market runway support from SmartDevNet towards the commercialization of their apps. The students were given a year to pursue commercialization of their apps. Once successfully commercialized, they will get additional cash prizes as well as a share of the revenues.
The students are all taking up Information Technology at USeP, which is a partner-school under SWEEP, the longest-running telco-academe linkage that seeks to enhance the quality of engineering and IT education in the Philippines.
TextPlus
TextPlus is a messaging app that can send messages without the need for Internet connectivity and GSM. Using Bluetooth technology, this messaging app is limited to recipients that are located nearby.
“We originally wanted to create an offline social media application, but I wanted something that would be more useful than just socializing so I came up with an idea of a texting app. The biggest challenge is our lack of skills on mobile peer-to-peer connection. Mobile file sharing was never taught in class so we had to learn everything by ourselves,” said Jason Christopher Uy.
The Adventure of Juan
This is a gamified and innovative way of searching for tourist spots and establishments in the Philippines.
“I want to promote Philippine tourism and culture in a fun and interactive way. I believe this app has a strong potential for commercialization. It will help boost the tourism sector and support industries. Its interactive platform will encourage users to learn about Philippine history, culture, and facts,” said Zanneth Mae Dinopol.
Autofix
Vehicle owners will find this app useful for emergencies as it facilitates faster response from auto repair shops.
“Overheating vehicles especially with the onset of summer can create traffic jams. This app will help vehicle owners contact repair shops for quick response. This is a promising app for commercialization given the market need,” said Janda Samantha Magno.
SOS App
This app makes the mobile phone a lifeline during emergencies, or especially when a crime is about to be committed. It allows the user to send a SMS for help to an emergency hotline and loved ones. The SMS functionality is triggered by the user’s voice saying the key word (help or the equivalent in the vernacular) on a pre-set volume and decibel level.
“I am not a superhero or a policewoman, but I can help prevent crimes from happening and save lives through this app. People tend to shout when in distress, and this app will trigger a pre-set SMS to emergency hotlines. The challenge was to come up with an app that requires minimal effort from the user,” said Louella Jane Catilosa.
Food Travel
By utilizing augmented reality, existing food establishments—menu, amenities offered, location—can be featured in one’s mobile phone.
“I am a food enthusiast. I thought of an app that will help food enthusiasts like me to locate food establishments. While there are other similar apps in the market, the use of Augmented Reality technology will set it apart from the rest,” said Quincy John S. Sacdalan.
Smart has been promoting the culture of innovation among schools to help make students industry-ready by the time they graduate in college. To know more about SWEEP, click on www.smartsweep.ph, or follow us on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/sweepschools).
SWEEP Open Competition winners. Five students from the University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City won the five best mobile apps under the first-ever SWEEP Open Competition. Awarding the prizes are from Smart executives Chito Bustamante (leftmost), and Paul Pajo (2nd from right); and Earl Martin Valencia, president and co-founder of IdeaSpace Foundation, the incubator arm of the group of companies in the Philippines led by Manuel V. Pangilinan.

Paper 1 (FTS)
Going to different places is indeed an exciting adventure for me. It makes me so refreshing to discover new spots especially outside the country. One of my dream places that I want to visit is in South Korea, I want to see those beautiful trees they have especially the cherry blossom. But since I am still a student all I need to do is to finish my studies and do my duty as well. This coming September we will having our Field Trip in Manila, since it’s in our curriculum to have the subject which is consist of three units.
Suppose to be we should get the subject last semester but unfortunately we weren’t able to grab it because of some instances and decided to have it this semester. As what I remember we have our very first meeting last semester. We were able to discuss the different Filed Trip Seminar Models as our option. These are the following FTS model:
Model A = 1 Major Fieldtrip (outside Mindanao) + 1 minor fieldtrip (Mindanao) + 1 seminar (national) + 2 hrs. Interpersonal skills;
Model B = 1 Major Fieldtrip (outside Mindanao) + 2 minor fieldtrip (Mindanao) + 2 seminars (8hrs) (Mindanao) + 2 hrs. Interpersonal skills and
Model C = 3 Minor fieldtrips (Mindanao) + 4 seminars (16hrs) (Mindanao) + 2hrs Interpersonal skills.
We have voted and were given those term papers to be given by our parents which have the final decision to vote on which model they prefer. But for me I will choose model A. Indeed it’s a little bit expensive but I think we can afford it. I know some of my classmates are having problems financially but I know they can do it. There are ways to find money because money is anywhere you can find it depending on how you would you use your ability and to do some ways to earn money. You can sell foods in the school and have part time job. Those simple things may help you it is just on how wise you are in facing them. It is a once a lifetime experience with your friends and classmates and of course I will treasure those moments. Having with your friends is a joyful thing that you cannot explain if there with you. You will discover their different attitudes that you didn’t notice when you’re still together and you will be just surprise because they have that unique ability that only them can do. A funny little thing could happen, especially when you’re together within a long week.
I’m really excited for our field trip I’m already thinking of the things that I could do. Since the majority has decided to choose model A which has one major Field Trip outside Mindanao which they prefer in Manila and has one minor field trip in Mindanao I forgot where specifically but I think near in Davao. By now we are discussing on distributing money every month so that it would not be hard for us to give full payment. For this month of June 27, 2014 we are task to pay seven thousand pesos for our plane ticket. As of now we are finding promos so that we can save money. Seven Thousand pesos is for back and forth plane travel since we will stay in Manila for five days. For those five days we will have different activity and different company to visit which are related with our course field. Choosing Model A is a little bit complicate if we talk about money because not all of us can afford the budget. But choosing Manila to be our major Field Trip will give an advantage to us student since in Manila big and popular Companies are in there. Visiting those Companies will help us to have learning’s or will give knowledge that we didn’t know and might give as the idea. Experiencing different things will really help you it’s like encountering different problems in life. As you encounter those different situations you will know more on how to handle things properly It is like molding you to became a new person who is more determine to do things rightly and just.
For now I am finding people who are good hearted person that is willing to give help by donating money by way of solicitation. Having solicitation may really help especially to those have many relatives that could help them. Like me I have only few friends here in my current place in here in NCCC Village Bajada. For four years of living here I can only count those people who know my name that’s why I have the problem of whose are where would I give this solicitation letter. Last Sunday June 22, 2014 I went to Santa Cruz Davao Del Sur and visit my brother and my few relatives there. For two days of staying in Santa Cruz I enjoyed those days with chitchatting my brother and play with my nieces. Then I told my cousins to help me regarding with my expenses so I decided to give some solicitation letter to her. It doesn’t matter how big or small they might give as long as they tend to help.
For this coming September I will list all the things that should be done and the places that I want to go especially in Mall of Asia, divisoria and most especially in Enchanted Kingdom. I will take the challenge in “Ride all you can”. It would be so great and will definitely precious moments with my friends. Having in different places will let you learn something. Experiencing adventure is a worth thing to have. We are so excited we just can’t hide it. Some of our professors will go with us and I think Sir Pabilona and our boss Sir Gamboa will be one of our guidance in travelling to Manila. Good Luck and God Bless to us.
Meeting 4 (FTS)
It was on July 07, 2014 and we have to discuss again about the progression of the papers for our Field Trip and it’s a good news because the president of the school have already signed the papers and were very mush happy to the news. We have paid five hundred pesos for the initial payment for Maynilad. We also tackled about the breakdown of paying money and everybody has agreed with the given dates. We’re also divided into eight to groups for our room.
Meeting 6 (FTS)
It was Friday in the afternoon we have to decide to meet again for further information regarding with our Minor Field Trip that would be held at Synnex - Concentrix, Damosa Davao City that would be on August 28,2014. As we have discussed the preparation we have also decided to wear uniform that symbolizes us that we are proud as Usepians. So at first I wonder why the FTS president chooses Concentrix and she explained to us the reasons behind it. After discussing about the preparation for our Minor Filed trip our professor had his speech regarding with the major field trip that would be held in Manila. We have the feeling that it would be a bad news since I’ve already heard about the news that happens in Bulacan regarding with the incident happen with the seven students. We feel so down about the news of the possibilities that it would be cancelled, it is not only about us but also our parents and guardians who find ways in getting money just to send us to manila. In spite of that news we really wanted to go in Manila because all the efforts had already done and were hoping for a good final result.
Meeting 7 (FTS)
We have met again on the 7th meeting for our FTS subject. The discussion is so disappointing to us student because the University President have decided to withdraw all the field trip in our Campus. But it is so sad because we really are affected if that would be the case because as it happens, almost eight thousand pesos will be lost regarding with the down payments of the tickets for the airplane and the rooms in Maynilad. We are not only affected but also our parents who have the big effort in earning the money. But it’s not really the final decision because there’s no memo about the cancellation of the FTS. Were still hoping that it will end to a good news and we can go to Manila.
Minor Travel Report (FTS)
Seminar Overview
As we get into our course we are already required to take Field Trip and Seminars which is included in our curriculum. Field Trip and Seminars is an educational movement or program of the student where they are able experience different training organizations from different places. The purpose of the trip is usually observation for education, non-experimental research or to provide students with experiences outside their everyday activities, such as going camping with teachers and their classmates. The aim of this is to inform us student to the newest innovation and companies that deals with different kinds of technologies that could be helpful to us in the near future. Through this we are able to learn important tips and information on such thing that we come across as we travel.
Day 1
On August 28, 2014 we are given a chance to visit Synnex-Concentrix that is located in Damosa Davao City. It serves as the minor field trip that is base in here Cagayan. As we tour inside their company I also learned different things that are new to me. Concentrix is a big Data Center that is divided into different sections of employee. They do not focus on one thing but they allow performing other tasks. They have also their Call center which catches my attention because I've already been in Call center but it didn't take too long. I was surprised because they have provided beds for the call center agent and a computer laboratory which they allow their employee to surf different sites in the internet which is pretty amazing. They have also their canteen and colorful comfort rooms. As we go into different rooms we are able to enter in Application Developer Laboratory and I have noticed familiar faces which are also our schoolmates in IC department.
What I learned?
As I go along with the visit in the Concentrix I learned that starting with a business requires a big amount of effort and dedication. Many employees have survived in the field of becoming a call center agent and becoming an application developer which is one of hardest part of becoming an Information technology student. I also learned their different processes in hiring applicants which will base on the results of the exam that will be taken by them.
What I like?
What I like the most during the tour is that they are able to take care of their employees they can provide the different needs by giving it to them. They have the proper aspects of seeing things righteously because one also of the advantage of providing the needs of an individual is that they will perform well in their job because they knew that they are being loved by the Company that their working. Like having rooms and beds if in case the employee needs to rest and one thing that catches my attention is the online medicine kit that allows you to buy online and it is available inside in the Company.
What I didn’t like?
Actually I can’t say any complain regarding with their performance because it’s pretty amazing and it’s almost having the right aspects of handling companies.
APPENDIX
What can I recommend for the improvement of the advance seminar program of USEP?
For the improvement of the advance seminar program in USeP I will recommend to also gather more information about the companies that are really providing the right facilities and can give knowledgeable information towards the student to enhance their ability or skills.
My advice to those who will take their advance seminar program in the near future.
One thing that I can advice to those batches that will take advance seminar program is that they will choose the company that can really help them and will suites their needs as IT students. They should also prepare their self in going to different places and be ready always.
Introduction (FTS)
Hello, I'm Louella Jane Catilosa and I expect the benefits that I can get with this subject like the knowledge that somehow I can use in the near future!
Meeting 6 (FTS)
On August 22, we meet again for another meeting about the new updates of our field trip. We talk about the payments and the deadlines also the segregation of the rooms of each group. My final roommate is Pauline, Angel, Annalou, Novile and Wendy. We also talk about the proper outfit during the seminars it is advice to wear dress, sandals, formal shirt for girls and black shoes for boys. For formality, we should wear slacks and not jeans and Sunday dress. Furthermore I was also contented with the groupings because I know I will enjoy have fun with them. Also, we discussed about the accident in Bulacan State University (BSU) field trip wherein there seven students died on the accident. Which made the situation complicated and our professor wants us to know the consequences that may happen to us. But I know it will be fine. That’s it!
Paper 2 (FTS)
One of my dreams is to ride in the plane and when I was little every time I saw a plane I shouted so loud thinking that they will hear me. It sounds really funny but I really enjoy doing it even if I’m inside in the house I immediately go out just to say “eroplano pasakya ko!!” I did it with my older brother and it gives us happiness.
Now my dream comes true. It’s my second time riding in a plane and you can really feel the tense during the first ever moment riding on it. The first time that I was able to ride in a plane is when I went here in Davao. We came together with my uncle and my cousin in Bohol. I really came from Bohol and then my uncle and one of my cousins just had a vacation in our place and fortunately an opportunity juts arrived and I never hesitate to say yes and that was the time I left my family for a good purpose. I know that it was my chance to live my dream because my uncle will send me to college that’s why I am here right now for good.
Many people dreamed to ride in a plane because they want to know how it really feels to be like inside and when the engine started it makes everyone so excited. At first I admit I’m such an ignorant person especially when it’s my first time to do such thing, I just put in my mind that’ it’s another adventure to conquer.
I do also have many expectations during my first ride in the plane. Before I’m just imagining riding on it but now it’s happening. You can’t really tell if things aren’t happening or not. It’s like just a dream you only see things at night when you sleep and one day you just wake up having all of those staff in your hands. Life is such an amazing journey to travel if you keep on believing and have the faith in GOD then it will slowly bring you to a bigger hope.
Life is full of unexpected surprises. There are many opportunities when one can secretly wish for something exciting to happen something out of the ordinary. The real surprise is when the wish unexpectedly comes true.
I was with my parents back then during Christmas in Loay Bohol. This is the place where my paternal grandparents live, and I supposed to go after a week in Davao City. Then knowing that an opportunity comes for me they have to decide wisely for my future. When I heard my parents discuss the plan, I was absolutely thrilled, and my excitement knew no bounds when they finalized that, I would stay in Davao City for a long time for my studies of course it is a hard thing for me because I won’t let them see for a long year but I’m the one who will benefit for this sacrifice. The finalisation of this plan put me on to college. We would be going by plane from tagbilran to Davao City was the highlight of the programmed according to me.
There were still fifteen days for us to start off but my imagination took to wings immediately. I started wondering how it would feel to be in the air without having wings to fly with. At long last, after a very long wait as it appeared, the curious wait ended and 15th December came and we started off from home to the airport.
Since this moment is the first time that I experience to ride in a plane. My heart beat pit a pat, pit a pat, as, I was now soon to face my first experience in an airplane. As soon as we reached the airport, the very sight of planes taking off and landing one by one simply exasperated me. I was restless to board a plane, the plane which would take me to Davao City.
Just as I was wondering as to when we would get inside the plane, there was an announcement for the passengers of our plane to get ready to board the plane. Now, we were being called and aha! My moment of excitement came to the hilt, and soon I was inside the plane. What a sight it was, its comfortable seats, its broad aisle, and above all its beautiful and charming air hostesses. I was wonderstruck to see so much in one plane and that also all together.
As soon as we were seated, I heard a voice announcing and requesting all passengers to fasten their belts. I looked for my belt, but did wonder why we were being asked to do so. However, as per the instructions, all the passengers tied belts, and just then, there was another announcement that the plane was about to take off. At this moment, I felt a peculiar pang in my chest as if my heart was hitting its walls, and I at once held on to Mummy's arms who was sitting next to me.
Only after a few seconds I think I was alright and felt normal and now, I looked on to the ground we had just left. As we rose above the ground, I could see the roads, vehicles on the roads, plain land, orchards gardens and Oh what a beautiful sight it was from the height. Soon I was so engrossed in enjoying the aerial view that I forgot all fear and nervousness.
Throughout the journey we were enjoying, eating reading and chatting with each other and co-passengers though I was more enraptured by the beautiful view from high above. When we had reached very high, all things on the ground seemed to be as tiny as pinheads, and moving things appeared to be ants. On the heights, I felt as though we were cutting through the clouds in the sky to find our way to Davao City. This was another enchanting scene.
As I had hardly started enjoying the scenic beauty from high above, there was an announcement that, we were about to land at Davao City airport, and that, we should tie our belts. No sooner we had tied our belts that, I could feel the plane taking a dive downwards, and lot once again I felt a pang in my heart, a sort of vacuum in the chest.
As I recovered from the pang, the plane had touched the ground, we had landed on the Davao city airport, and the plane was moving fast on the runway. This was the end of my first trip by air and it had ended before I could register any moments of pleasure.
This first air ride was a memorable one, and a real experience. After that flight to Davao City years back, I have had a second opportunity though I'm sure I will soon get my second chance and this will happen this coming September for our Field Trip. Next time I will be less tense and my heart beats will be well under control. The next trip will be, whenever it may be, surely more enjoyable.
TRAVEL REPORT (MAJOR FIELDTRIP)
Seminar Overviews
Field Trip and Seminars is one of the subject
that is required to us in taking up Bachelor of Science in Information
Technology and is include in the curriculum. It is where you will experience
different kind of environment if we talk about places. It is letting yourselves
to involve in many altered activities and meeting people. During the seminar in
Manila we are able to take a visit with many companies and schools. Every
company, shares their different perspectives and learnings in business and in
dealing up with technologies. From there we became more aware of the things
that might also happen to us in the near future. Seminars enlighten up or minds
for more possible things that would help and change us. Of course it’s not only
about setting in a corner and just listen to what they are saying, we also had
a fun time together with my classmates and our professors. It is one of the
memorable moments that happens to me, I mean sending my time with my classmates
and friends really gave deeper meaning of friendship because by the all the
activities and days we shared you slowly know the person’s attitude because
from being just a classmate we create a more level up relationship with each
other.
Day 1
During the first day of our major field trip
we arrive early in the morning in the NAIA terminal and we are so excited yet
tired because of the jetlag. After that we have waited for the bus to come and
after a few minutes the bus just arrived and we went to McDonald to eat
breakfast. I don’t even eat all the foods because I’m so full that my tommy
doesn’t want to digest it. The first company to visit is the Accenture which is
located in Cyberpark, E. Rodriguez, Bagumbayan, and Quezon City and is one of
the early leaders in business process outsourcing on the Philippines. Business Services address the most pressing needs of
the clients by industry and by enterprise function. At the same time they
accept different clients to solve their problems and provide their needs.
Industry Business Services address the business and performance issues that are
unique to a given industry. Function Business Services address issues and
processes in specific enterprise functions, such as procurement or human
resources, which are applicable across industries. Accenture Business Services
span all four of our growth platforms Strategy, Digital, Technology and
Operations. We really enjoy listening to the speaker because he also came from
Davao and studied in Ateneo De Davao. Of course I enjoy the snacks even though
I’m still full I still eat it. After the first seminar we had our lunch at
Kenny Rogers, Katipunan Quezon City and food is so good. I really like the part
where it’s all about eating foods. At exactly 1:00pm we started to move for the
next Company to visit which is IBM located at Ayala Technohub. Quezon City. International Business Machines is a
multinational computer technology and IT consulting corporation. The company is
one of the few information technology companies with a continuous history
dating back to the 19th century. IBM manufactures and sells computer hardware
and software and offers infrastructure services, hosting services, and
consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe
computers to nanotechnology. IBM has been well known through most of its
recent history as one of the world's largest computer companies and systems
integrators and is one of the largest and most profitable information
technology employers in the world. For me after visiting all the companies IBM
is one of an interesting company to deal with because it’s more about software
and they introduces many different faces of application in the fields of
technology. It’s just sad because we have only few hours to listen to his
lectures and I hope I can have some time to listen more. After the seminars
with the two companies we had the shopping time in Trinoma and since we have
many left overs that we kept and we saw beggars outside the mall so we decided
to give it to them. And then after the long tiring day we did checked in in
Kabayan Hotel, EDSA, Pasay City and at last I we can rest and take a warm bath.
What I learned?
I learned of the new invented
software in IBM in Bluemix and it’s pretty amazing and also the Accenture that
deals with the different outsourcing business.
What I liked?
I like how they have shown to us
the willingness to lecture and tell us more about their companies.
What I didn’t like?
The chosen companies to visit are
pretty good the only thing that disappoint me is the time allocated in the IBM.
DAY 2
PLDT & Ideaspace
In the second day of our field trip we
visited the PLDT which located in Mandaluyong that stands for Philippines Long
Distance Telephone Company and the ENOLA. I really sleepy in that morning when
we arrive in the company and when we starts the seminar a shown up and she
introduced herself to us. She is a good speaker because she catches my attention
which wipes out my drowsiness during that day. First she has discussed the
history of the PLDT from the very old up to the current. Actually PLDT is one
of a kind that helps many people especially to communicate with a long range
distance with our love ones. After that we are able to know there different
inventions that were very useful to many people. It is pretty amazing on how
they make it and get the idea just to serve us. Filipinos are really awesome
indeed on how they form and plan for the best. And then we proceed to the
convention hall I think, there’s another speaker who spoke to us regarding with
the purpose and the important of PLDT in the field of communication and one of
the funny thing that happens out there is that almost every one of us got
sleepy. And then they show us the very important part of their company it was
like a monitoring room that able them to know the current status of their
service I think. After the long sleepy day we had our lunch at the bus. I was
really hungry back then that I was able to finish my foods and the drinks. I
just realize that even if you just sat there and listen to them you still got
hungry. The next target company is the Ideaspace Foundation located in Dela Rosa St. Makati. There we are able to
meet those people who became successful because of their idea that was given an
opportunity to continue. Even if how small or how did you came out with that
idea it would doesn’t matter as long as you are willing and determined to
pursue the goal of finishing your idea. And then we had our fun time to roam
around in SM MOA. It was really cool and I hope I had more time to try skating
because I really wanted to try it but sad to say we lack time better luck next
time.
What I learned?
I learn many things especially
during the visit in PLDT it was also said that the signal can also be connected
under water through those wires and if there might be any problem they will
know it and fix it.
What I liked?
Are the facilities in the PLDT.
What I didn’t like?
Is the last speaker because I
felt really sleepy and I hope He can be more entertained on the way he
discussed.
Day 3
In the third day of the trip we visited the Y4it
or commonly known as Youth
Congress on Information Technology that was established since 2003. It is an annual information technology event in the Philippines, organized by the UP System Information
Technology Foundation that aimed primarily at professionals, educators, IT
experts, enthusiasts and most especially college students like us who just came
from Davao just to attend the said event and it was worth it. Various relevant and exciting IT topics are
presented and discussed during the event and many different kinds of speakers
have attended the said event. It was a whole day event and many students
gathered from different schools and I really enjoyed the moment especially in
completing the activity that they have given to us for the chance of winning
many prices. The goal is to complete the twenty stabs from the different
companies and they gave freebies and magazine if you like their pages.
Fortunately I survived I complete the task and I’m really having fun during
that day and then there it was they are calling the lucky number to win prices
like cell phone and etc. I was hoping that my number will be announced and sad
to say I didn’t get anything from it. It was just the experience I had that
would be remembered forever. But there’s also a point where I badly need to go
to laboratory malas nga naman! I had a stomach ache and it’s not really good so
I asked for a medicine and after an hour I became fine. So we had our lunch at
Taste Asia located at SM MOA and it’s the time where we take many selfies and
cameras are everywhere. We successfully finished the program and sad to say we
only had one day to attend the said event because it’s actually a three days
event. How we wish we had more time to travel in Manila and visit many
companies that would really give as the knowledge and motivation to still hold
on with our courses. After that we are given the time to roam around in Mall of
Asia we visit inside and out of the building and it’s really a hard thing to do
because of the wideness of the building. We separate into groups and I was with
Uy, Charles, Kirby, Syrene, Joan, Donah and Mark. It’s just funny because those
classmates that you thought would be boring to talk are also that person who
has a good sense of humor. We also tired the free make up makeover leaded by
one of my friends and the boys just waited on us to finish and then we go back
to the hotel and rest.
What I learned?
I learned many different kinds of
aspects as I attended the event. Like how they manage to develop a business
that totally made a boom in the industry of technology.
What I liked?
I like the way they have prepared
the event and also the effort of gathering different schools to attend in big
event. They have also invited good speakers that wil surely give you the
motivation to continue achieving your goals in life.
What I didn’t like?
Because it’s a whole event,
they should have also made a production number that would entertain the
students because many fall asleep during the event. It is also important to make the amuse the guest
with some energizing activity.
DAY 4
One of the exciting moments of the trip is during the fourth
day. We wake up early in the morning because we will travel an hour from EDSA
to Tagaytay. One of the companies that I
can really say I have enjoyed is the TOSHIBA. It is a manufacturing company for
hard disk product and it’s really huge. At the very first event we were able to
wear a uniform with the combination of a hat and a suit for the protection of
their company because there products are sensitive with dust. You don’t even require
entering the laboratory when you wear makeup or any powder on your face. We
first discuss about their different branches internationally or local they did
really good job in making their company such a successful one. After the tour
in their building we had some snacks for our hungry tummy. One also of the good
thing that we encounter during that day is that there are few employees that
came from USeP, they became or tour guide and it’s a nice thing to be proud of.
After that we had our lunch at Max’s Restaurant located in Tagaytay. At the
back view of the restaurant you can see the view of Mount Pinatubo and of
course it’s time to take selfie because we take every moment we had during our
field trip. After eating we had the sightseeing at People’s Park, Tagaaytay City.
We had a long walk but we enjoyed it, after we arrived to the top we buy
souvenirs for our friends and relatives. There are many choices the only
problem is the money it’s the main problem of the student’s like me. We are running out of time because we still
have to go to the Enchanted Kingdom which became one of the memorable moments I
had. It was really a fun, fun, fun day for me because I was like a little kid
who enjoyed every ride and doesn’t even care if I get smelly or get wet. One of
the intense ride that I experience is the space shuttle it was really cool and
I wish I could go back there with my family someday. I suggest to those batches
who will take the field trip please don’t miss riding in Log Jump. I swear you will forget all your
worries after that trust me. The enjoyment doesn’t ended in Enchanted Kingdom
because we still had to go back to tutuban part two and after those activity
that we did even if we are so tired we still have the huge smile in our faces. After
a long tiring day we still have to pack our things because tomorrow morning we
have to check out in the Kabayan hotel and after the visit schedule we will go
straight to NAIA airport.
What I learned?
I learned the different process
of a developing a specified product like what the TOSHIBA did in creating their
business. It is indeed a genius thing in building a company that will still
hold on in a long time and still have the competitiveness to be more useful to
many people.
What I liked?
I liked the way they disciplined
their employees like greeting a warm hello and also into their work. They are
more aware of the rules in their company which also help not only to them but
to all the people involved in the organization.
What I didn’t like?
I can’t say any negative comment
regarding with their company.
Day 5
On the last day of our trip we visited two schools the first one is the Ateneo de Manila University on Dept. of Information System and Computer Science that is located in Katipunan, Quezon City. Upon arriving in the University we are welcomed by the facilitator and guide us into the laboratory room. After a while the speakers arrived and discuss us about their course guidance. I feel really sleepy during that day and all I want to do is to sleep. It was just really funny because our tour guide Kuya Al fall asleep and I can hear him snoring he’s really tired I think. After a long time of speech she was able to introduce to us some of their gadgets that their using in the lab. It was really amazing because they had their oculus rift, Google glass and so on. It only shows that they can really afford buying such thing that could really help their students. One also of the things that amaze me is their fast connection of the internet because it’s so cool and I wish our school would have also the opportunity to enhance our connection regarding with the internet. One also of the things that I’ve noticed during the tour inside the campus is that they have allowed the freedom to do things they want as long as nobody will be hurt. I saw one of their students eat breakfast outside the room which is not a normal thing if you are in an area where many people can see you. Most of the students also talks English and I’m sure I will really have a big problem talking to them. After that we take a look with their merchandises and it’s expensive and I can’t even afford to buy one. We suppose to have a lunch at Jollibee but we just prefer to eat on a place that we wanted. We also visit the merchandising store in UP since our next target is the UP on Dept. of Computer Science which is located in Diliman, Quezon City. After an hour of waiting the bus to arrive we are able to take pictures with the Oblation statue by Filipino artist Guillermo E. Tolentino, a man facing upward with arms outstretched, symbolizing selfless offering of oneself to his country. Then we finally arrived in the UP campus and were able to visit their different laboratory they have also introduces to us there on going thesis study. It also seems that they are really focused on what they’re doing and their perseverance to do such thing. After the school visit we also went to Resort World and had some tour inside. For the very last day of our trip I don’t like to go home yet I want stay more days but sad to say it’s time to say goodbye Manila, I will surely miss those moments that I spent during those days.
What I learned?
I learned many information in UP
Diliman regarding with their thesis on how they planned and manage it from the
very start of implementing their ideas. The Ateneo De Manila also shows their
ways on how they perform and use equipment for their studies.
What I liked?
During the visit in UP Diliman
what I liked is the way they handle their plans in making their thesis and the
Ateneo De Manila that allows us to use their school equipments and let us
experience the high level technology that doesn’t exist in our school.
What I didn’t like?
What I don’t like during the
school visit is that the speakers aren’t prepared that much.
APPENDIX
What can I recommend for the improvement of the
advance seminar program of USEP?
The handling process of the field trip is good and it was
planned well by the officers and the organizers, there might some instances
that problems occur but that’s part of the process. What I can recommend for
the improvement of the advance seminar program in USeP is that they will choose
companies that would accommodate more on hands on activity because if we only
focus in seminars I think some of the students might get boring or become less
interested on the topics that will be discussed with the speakers. Performing
hands on activities will really help the students to learn more because it
allows them to perform and enhance their capabilities.
My advice to those who will take their advance
seminar program in the near future.
My advice to those who will
take their advance seminar program in the near future is that they will
understand the benefit that they can get if they choose Manila of course it
depends on the decision of the parents because not all of them can afford the
expenses. I would also advice to them to perform all the activities that are
required in taking up the subject because at the end they will be one who will
suffer and enjoy every moment of the field trip because it only happens once in
a life time in spending time with your friends and get to know them more.
